Frederic Street Pre-School is a playgroup based in the St James area of Walthamstow in East London (London Borough of Waltham Forest).

The pre-school is a member of the Pre-School Learning Alliance and is Ofsted-registered; we were inspected by Ofsted in December 2004 . Click here to see the Ofsted inspection report.
The pre-school's aims and vision are:
  • to promote learning through play linked to the Foundation Stage Curriculum, to promote a safe and happy atmosphere for all children to thrive,
  • for all children to be able to achieve, to develop a sense of self and individuality through play and interaction,
  • to give children a positive attitude and support towards their first experiences of learning and to support parents and carers towards this goal,
  • to adhere to the national standards as set out by the Office for Standards in Education (Ofsted).

We take children from 2½ years up to school starting age, with a maximum of 24 children attending each session. Younger children can attend the pre-school with their carers on Mondays.

We welcome children from all backgrounds, religions and cultures as well as children with special needs.

We strive to provide for the developmental needs of each child in the group and all are encouraged, whenever possible and appropriate, to participate in all the group's activities.
Our system of observation and record-keeping, which operates in conjunction with parents, enables us to monitor the children's needs and progress on an individual basis.

Our key worker system ensures that each adult is especially responsible for and close to just five or six children, so each receives plenty of adult time and attention.

The needs and progress of children who have special educational needs are monitored by our group's special educational needs co-ordinator (SENCO). We aim to follow the DFEE Code of Practice on Special Educational Needs and also the guidelines supplied to private and voluntary providers of pre-school education.
